Mick, about 2 years ago, we got two of the Whirlpool uprights. They are energy star. I have been happy with them. Lowes had the cheapest price on them.

Re: Looking for a new Freezer

Don't do Frigidaire. THEY SUCK!!! I had a new stove and refriderator from them. The burners on the stove went from simmer to full fledge boil. No happy medium. The Fridge was totally shot by 2 years old. Have Maytag now and they work great. Try Sears for the whirlpool.

Oh, also, we have a small 13 year old upright Amana and it still works great.

Kenmore has different manufactures make their products, when you go in, ask who is the maker of that one.

Re: Looking for a new Freezer

all the review on this are good to the other ones we are looking at . here one review .... don't know what everyone is talking about. I own the older version without lcd temp screen. I almost didn't buy this because ALL the others said how loud it is. I have an open floor plan so quiet appliances are a must. It's a commercial freezer, people. Yes, it is a tiny bit louder than my side by side was, but the freezer is twice a large! I watch TV, talk on the phone, have parties where everyone always ends up in the kitchen and I have no problem with this. If this will fit in your kitchen, buy it.

Re: Looking for a new Freezer

I would not buy a Kenmore nothing.
I have the series 90 washer and Dryer and the washer is the noisiest machine I have ever had in my home. The Dryer is holding up OK for now.

I have had Whirlpools, Maytags, Ropers, Kelvinator, GE, and Westinghouse.

The best I have had was a Kelvinator Washer that lasted through some very hard duty of three kids and all my clothes in my Farming and Logging days. I also had a Kelvinator Chest Freezer that lasted a great many years and only quit serving me when I ran from the spontaneous multi personality pit vipers house that I was living with at the time with just my kids and clothes. As far as I know it is still running somewhere.

I would go with a Kelvinator or a Whirlpool and I think Whirlpool makes them both anyway.

1 Attachment(s)
I bought the Kenmore Pro upright individual freezer and fridge. Installed side by side they look like one massive fridge. I like them so far, and one of the features that I liked was the external analog temperature gauge. You can always see if it is working and what the internal temperature is.

The attachment shows both fridge and freezer with the door open. The trim kit makes it look like one unit, but they are individual units.

We bought an Whirlpool Freezer (an EVL 201 something) last year and are very happy with it. I would avoid Frigidaire too.

Don't forget to but it on an emergency power outlet.

Northern Tool has solar/dc powered freezers. Since I'm spending your money buy 2 of the 8 footers, and one of 5.8 sq. foot. You would have a greater versatility with 3 freezers.

Re: Looking for a new Freezer

Most of them are mere shadows of earlier models.

It is hard to find any fridge or freezer not made in Mexico.

Expect cheap plastic parts that do not hold up well.

Also this freezer going in the garge will this hurt the freezer

We keep our freezers in the garage. We also do a lot of wood work in the garage. They have not died yet!

What emergency power outlet do you recommend for a freezer?

Looks like we have the same one you are looking at, just several years older. It's always been outside on our back porch. All our patio areas have cover/roof, but I've seen it hit 129.5 degrees F. in the shade in the summer, though usually it gets only 115 to 120.... and we do hit freezing some winter nights, though not this past/current winter. It freezes harder and better than the 2 freezers in the house which are refrig/freezer combinations. Of course we use the key all the time, and I strap it with a heavy duty cable & padlock when we leave home for vacations & stuff because it's outside. Thing runs quiet enough that I have to look at the light on the bottom front to make sure it's running. Works like a champ. :ok:

Most building codes requires fridges/freezers to be on their own circuit, with no other loads. If the breaker got tripped by another load, your food would rot, unless you noticed right away.

Re: Looking for a new Freezer

Oh ok, I was wondering if there was something, other than a gas generator, that could be used to keep food frozen for a few days in the event of a long power outage.

Best bet is a propane powered fridge/freezer out of a RV.

No electicity required, and can run for weeks on a small amount of propane.

2nd best is a freezer specially made for use off grid or solar... These are heavily insulated and can run on minimal power. But they are WAY pricey.
